Autumn Programme

November 25, 2010 - Lunch with Katherine Govier



This month we are focusing on one of the great Japanese artists, HOKUSAI Katsushika, and his daughter Oie. Born in Edo , Japan in the Autumn of 1760, Hokusai-sensei produced in the following almost ninety years some of the finest and most memorable paintings and ukiyo-e woodblock prints ever made. The series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, especially The Great Wave off Kanagawa, completed in the 1830’s, when Hokusai was in his 70’s, come immediately to mind.

We want to open the door to this period in Edo through a fascinating and compelling book, The Ghost Brush. Our guest speaker, the Canadian author Katherine Govier, will discuss her recent novel and take you deep into the life of late 18th and early 19th century Edo. And what of his daughter Oie? What role did she play in her father’s success? How did Hokusai produce incredible art (10,000 images) until his death at 90 in 1849? Was Oie the “ghost brush”? Did Oie’s “colours represent her signature”? How did a Canadian novelist, unable to speak Japanese, research this subject so thoroughly?

Katherine, writer, researcher and raconteur, is the author of nine novels, three short story collections and the editor of two books of travel essays. The winner of the Marian Engel Award (for a woman writer in mid-career), the Toronto Book Award and author of a New York Times Notable Book of the Year 2003, she has a clear, definable footprint in Japan . This arises through, inter alia, two of her exceptional books, Three Views of Crystal Water, about the ama diving women, and The Ghost Brush, which we will hear about and discuss on November 25th.
