Concert for Japan - Trios from the East and West

Saturday, April 30, 2011 @ 8:00 pm
Perimeter Institute and the Waterloo Region Japanese

Canadian Community Association (WRJCCA) are proud to present trios from the East and West, ten ten and the Seraphine Piano Trio.

In this special benefit concert, you are invited to join a unique musical experience where the trio of sounds of the East are paired against the trio of sounds of the West. Both groups will present their works in their respective traditional set-up: ten ten on Japanese instruments such as the shamisen, shakuhachi, shinobue, taiko, with voice and the Seraphine on the grand piano, violin and cello. Whereas the music of ten ten may be described as 'tradition with a twist', the Seraphine will perform two great works by two of the most famous European composers of classical music, Mozart and Mendelssohn.

Please go to their websites to learn more about these musicians and their music.

Seraphine Piano Trio

The Seraphine Piano Trio is an ensemble dedicated to the presentation of Classical to Modern works from the mainstream western classical chamber music repertoire. The group was founded in
fall 2010 by the Japanese pianist Sanae Nakajima, who is joined by Sarah Fraser Raff (a Japanese-Canadian) on the violin and Amber Ghent (Canadian) on the cello. The trio strives to deliver an intelligent and fresh approach to the interpretation of works chosen from the rich and diverse music composed for this medium.

ten ten

ten ten is a Japanese folk-inspired music trio headed by vocalist Aki Takahashi. The ensemble will perform a variety of traditional and original compositions performed on shamisen, bamboo flutes, voice and taiko drums.

In the Japanese alphabet, "ten ten" refers to two dots used to change the sound of a syllable. In the same spirit, ten ten strives to create its own unique voice for Japanese folk music breathing new life into this traditional art form.

Members: Aki Takahashi - vocals, shamisen
Kiyoshi Nagata - taiko, shinobue
Scott Kusano - taiko, shakuhachi
