VOLUNTEERS

Thank you for agreeing to participate in the JCCC Origami Crane Project. This project is a way of letting children in Japan know that Canadian students, and specifically, Torontonians, are thinking of them.

For this project, we have already received confirmation of support from the Toronto District School Board and the Toronto Catholic District School Board. This week, a letter will go out to all the principals within these two organizations asking if their school would like to be part of this project. We should know by next weekend, the number of participating schools.

We will be asking the students to fold origami cranes and hope that each school will be able to fold 1000 cranes (in Japanese, “Senbazuru”). The crane is symbolic of peace and long life overcoming adversity. In addition, we will be asking the students to write a short letter to be
sent to the students, as well.

Upon receiving the list of schools who wish to participate in this project, we will contact each school and arrange to have you, one of our volunteers, attend at the school on a specific date and time to provide support and instructions on how to fold the crane. This will mean that you will need to be available to attend at the school during school hours (ie 9:00am 3:30pm). We anticipate that you will only need to attend for about an hour or two per school. We will
also direct the school contact to the JCCC (www.jccc.on.ca) website where instructions on how to fold the crane together with the meaning of the origami crane and factual information about the disaster may be found. The letters from each student should be completed before you arrive at the school. At the end of the session with the school, you will collect the letters and completed cranes and bring them back to the JCCC.

Once the JCCC has collected all the letters and cranes, we will communicate with our contacts in Japan. Please understand that due to transportation issues in Japan, it may make sense for us to store the letters and cranes until our Japanese contacts are better prepared to receive and distribute them. ロレーンからの補足説明

This is a project which originated with the JCCC at the Board level. In addition to the large financial donation the JCCC has made to Japan, the JCCC Board felt that it would make sense to address matters at the ‘micro’ level ie to reach out to people at the personal level. By making
cranes and writing letters, we felt that the people (in this case, students) in Japan would know that we, in Canada, care about what they have experienced. We will be sending volunteers into the schools who wish to participate in this project. The volunteers will teach the students how to fold the cranes. In addition to connecting with the Japanese people, this project also has the potential to teach students more about the Japanese culture and produce long lasting
relationships between Japanese and Canadian students (like pen pals). Since we are sensitive to how overburdened the internal systems are in Japan, at present, we plan to hold off on sending over the cranes/letters until we receive the ‘green light’ from our contacts in Japan (ie the Canadian Ambassador’s office and the Consul General’s office).

現在、折り紙指導のボランティアはそんなに数がおおくないと思いますので、ＦＴＦメンバーの皆さんがボランティアしてくださると、大変喜ばれると思います。近隣の学校のみあるいはお子さんの通う学校だけという条件でもかまわないとおもいます。ボランティアの受付窓口はＪＣＣＣの Hipshゆきさんです。ご希望の方は直接連絡して下さい。

また、ローカルスクール（今回はトロントに限られますが）にコンタクトしていただいて、日本人が生徒にいるということを伝え、参加を促すのもよいのではないかと思います。

以前皆さんがＦＴＦで話しておられた、募金活動につなげる折鶴のプロジェクト（＄１で折鶴を売る、というようなアイデアだったとおもいます）とはちょっと違いますが、ＪＣＣＣとしては文化活動を通じての貢献という観点からこのようなプロジェクトのデザインになったと理解しています。（一番下の、ロレーンからの補足説明をご覧ください）被災地に千羽鶴を送るというのは、どなたかがおっしゃっていたように、日本では近年ではほぼタブーになっているというような話を、たまたまこちらに遊びに来ている父（日本在住）からも聞いています。なのでそのあたりはいろいろとご意見やご質問もあるかと思いますが、これはこういう形でとりあえずまとまっており、当面の内容変更は行われないと考えていいと思います。なので、こういう形での貢献について納得できる方に参加していただたくということになると思います。

わたしも、正直なところ内容の細かい点については「？」と思わなくもないのですが、日系を中心とするＪＣＣＣが、このようにすばやくスクールボードレベルと交渉し、日本のために行動してくれたということに、日本から来た移住者として、感謝したい気持です。また、このイベントに参加することにより意識がたかまり、Toonie Thursday
の募金により多くの子供達・家庭が協力してくれるのではないかと期待しています。

私の方からも、今日までにやりとりした中で分かった事をご報告します。

先ず、校長に直にアプローチし参加を促す。今回はスクールボード主体のプロジェクトなので、詳細については全てボード内の担当者にに確認して頂く。既に各学校に送られているはずのロレーンさんからの説明文やボードからの手配手順説明を読んで頂くと分かるとのことです。4月4日までに申し込みのあった学校に対し、スクールボー
ドから折り紙の手配やボランティアの手配が出される。（なので、今回我が学校は少し早すぎた為に折り紙の手配については交渉中です。ボランティアに関しては直接ロレーンさんから手配頂く事になりました。）我が校での当日のボランティアは、ＪＣＣＣ手配の方以外に、私と、同じ学校の日本人生徒の母みほさんと、我が家に滞在中のワーキングホリデイビザ保持者とその友人の計４名がボランティアとして参加する事になっています。初日の様子を見てから、2日目のお手伝いの数を検討し、不足の場合はＦＴＦのみなさんにご協力をお願いするかもしれません。
