As part of the literary festival Found in Translation, which features authors who write in a language that is not their native tongue, Japanese-born poet Ryoko Sekiguchi will visit the Japan Foundation , Toronto , to talk about her career as a francophone author. Ms. Sekiguchi will also discuss the situation of francophonie, writers of foreign origin who write in Japanese, and various cases of writers who have reason to write in the language of others.

About Ryoko Sekiguchi:
Born in Japan , Ryoko Sekiguchi (France/Japan) began to write poetry in both Japanese and French at an early age. At the age of 18, she received the Tokyo Literature Prize for her work Cahiers de la poésie contemporaine. Residing in Paris since 1997, she currently teaches at various institutes, including the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales, and has worked as a translator. She has translated works by authors including Gôzô Yoshimasu, Yoko Tawada, Pierre Alferi, Anne Portugal and Atiq Rahimi, and her own poems have been translated into English, Korean, Swedish, and Arabic.

About Found in Translation:
Original and enlightening, Found in Translation highlights authors whose works have originated in a language other than their native tongue. Led by the Consulate General of France and Authors at Harbourfront Centre, this year’s inaugural festival focuses on contemporary French literature by authors from around the world. Held over three days this June, English-, French-, Spanish-, and Japanese-language events will take place at the Alliance Française de Toronto, Café Casablanca, Harbourfront Centre, The Japan Foundation , and Spanish Centre.
