The Heron Maiden has been considered to be Tamasaburo’s signature piece. Since he first performed the role in 1978 Tamasaburo has performed the piece over five hundred times. Comparing three DVD recordings of Tamasaburo’s performances owned by The Japan Foundation Toronto Library, the development and transformation of Tamasaburo’s magical bird images will be traced in this presentation. Using his personal experiences with Tamasaburo’s Heron Maiden and his private collections of photography, videos, etc., Toshi Aoyagi will explain the characteristics of Japanese classic performing arts. Witnessing the same piece performed by the same actor repeatedly over the years, the passive action of sitting in the theatre has grown into the milestones of life-memories.
