"What is home? A place that one can settle, belong, escape to and feel comfort in? A set of portable values and beliefs that one can carry wherever they go? How do the notions of "home" bring us together?"

Upon its 10th anniversary, Gendai Gallery embarks on a new journey of experimental collaborations with greater East Asian perspectives, presenting its third installment of New Creators Series. Bungalow Colony is an exhibition that meditates various aspects of "home" featuring new works by A Collection of Foreign Objects (ACOFO), Aleksandra Rdest, Reiko Shimizu, Seema Narula, Steve Newberry, and guest artists, Myung-Sun Kim and Tom Ngo. The artists explore the theme through their fragmented reminiscence of objects, stories, memories, and values rooted in personal identities.

Visitors to Bungalow Colony are all welcome "home" to contribute their thoughts, interpretations, and sensations of home.

A Collection of Foreign Objects (ACOFO) was founded in Japan in 2002 by a group of Canadian artists living there at the time. These artists saw important connections between the artwork they were producing and the work produced by their Japanese contemporaries. Currently based in Toronto and Hamilton, the collective has gathered regularly to collaborate on thematically based exhibitions and events that deal with their common experiences. With each endeavour, the group’s members and artwork have shifted and evolved.

Gendai Gallery is a not-for-profit art space located at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Gendai’s mandate is to cultivate dialogue through contemporary art, focusing on experimental collaborations with contemporary artists and organizations for the production and dissemination of artwork from East Asian perspectives.
