In 1999, violinist Mayumi Seiler set out to fulfill her musical vision of a Toronto-based chamber music ensemble that would fuse the extraordinary talents of both Canadian and international musicians with string-oriented repertoire spanning from the Baroque to the contemporary.
Via Salzburg’s third concert of the season—entitled East and West—will feature a collaboration with special guest artists, the OnnanoKo Drumming Ensemble. At the heart of the program are two world premieres of works written for Via Salzburg and OnnanoKo by Canadian composers Alice Ping Yee Ho and Kevin Lau. Also on the program are Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Bartpk’s Divertimento for Strings.

Thee Michelle Gun Elephant Final Concert Film- International Premiere at Canadian Music Week
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant
Michelle Gun Elephant Thee Movie – Last Heaven 031011
Saturday, March 13, 3:00 pm
Royal Cinema, 608 College Street , Toronto
From 1991 until 2003, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant were, quite simply, one of the greatest bands on the planet. Absolutely massive stars in their native Japan the band would build a loyal following around the globe with their brand of punk blues, a sound built around Futoshi Abe’s driving guitars and Yusuke Chiba’s lonesome howl of a voice. They were raw, they were powerful, and whether you spoke their language or not, their message came through loud and clear in the music.
But all things come to an end and in late 2003 the band would say goodbye with one final performance, a performance that would be filmed for posterity’s sake but never released. Fast forward six years. Chiba and drummer Kuhara are still hard at it in very like-minded act The Birthday and the rest of the band members remain close friends, which makes it all that much harder when guitarist Abe is struck down by cancer. The possibility of a reunion now well and truly closed off, that final concert footage is dusted off, remastered and cut into a touring film experience - a last chance for fans to see the band in action and a final tribute to Abe.
CMW is proud to present the first screening of Last Heaven 031011 outside of Japan and while the film screens without subtitles, the music is what matters. And the music is absolutely brilliant. Co-presented by the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival.
