1. Project X: Innovators
The Kasumigaseki - Strength Through Flexibility
The construction of hi-rise buildings was thought to be impossible in Japan, a nation prone to earthquakes,
but the 36 floors Kasumigaseki Building was completed in 1968.
The design was based on a revolutionary construction theory of a framework absorbing tremors,
much like the branches of a willow tree flexibly allowing wind to blow past it.
The project proceeded; carrying with it the future of Japanese hi-rise construction technology,
but creating one 147-meter perpendicular pillar by connecting 11-meter beams was no easy task.
Not even the slightest discrepancy could be allowed. At one point, the construction appeared to have reached a deadlock.
This passionate story focuses on the technicians in their efforts to complete Japan's first skyscraper.
