HIGH STAKES – What Lies Ahead for the Global Economy?
Westin Harbour Castle Convention Centre, Tuesday, March 24, 2009

We are pleased to confirm the details of the Symposium on the most important issue facing the world in 2009 - the global economic crisis - being hosted by The Japan Society. While each of the United States and Canada has authorized a significant stimulus programme, it seems clear to many learned economists and policy pundits around the world that the steps taken and planned to date are insufficient to meet the global needs. Indeed, the crisis is endemic and, for the first time in the post-war era, the United States will need assistance from all developed countries, including Canada and Japan, to ease its and our way out of this economic and financial maelstrom.

The speakers we have assembled are amongst the most knowledgeable available and will provide views and comments from the perspectives of Japan, Europe, and Canada. One of our speakers, Martin Wolf, the noted economic correspondent of the Financial Times of London wrote in a recent edition of his column on this issue as follows:

Decisions taken in the next few months will shape the world for a generation. If we get through the crisis without collapse, we will have the time and the chance to construct a better and more stable global order. If we do not, that opportunity may not recur for decades. We are living on the cusp of history. The priority is to reverse the downward spiral of despair through overwhelming and concerted action. That will only occur if the US now gives the leadership we need.

Our purpose in presenting this Symposium is to provide a context for your consideration of this explosive issue, to outline the factors and policies relevant to its solution, to stimulate discussion and debate around this topic and to act as a catalyst to a broadening global awareness of the central issues and policy solutions. We expect it to be an exceptional conference on a subject that is of overriding interest to each and every one of us, both personally and collectively.

In the attached flyer, you will find detailed information on the Symposium and registration requirements. We urge you to register as soon as possible as space is limited. Members of The Japan Society are entitled to a 10% discount on the registration fee so that individual registrations are $225.00 plus G.S.T. ($236.25) and tables (for eight) are $1,800.00 plus G.S.T. ($1,890.00).

Please feel free to contact me at ben@japansocietycanada.com or 416.366.4196 for further details or to confirm your registration. We look forward to hearing from you.

With kind regards,

Ben Ciprietti, President and CEO
